Citrix Printdetect: manage printer drivers remotely

A few months ago on the Citrix site appeared very promising new tool: Printdetect. Here's how it works.

The Printdetect is a tool that can work both command line, both in graphic design, able to see the full list of drivers installed on a single server, specifying which are native to Microsoft and what third-party. Finally, you can delete the unwanted drivers with a few clicks of the mouse .... Everything even remotely.

The version now available on the Citrix site has some problems and so I contacted the author, Kapildev Ramlal, called Kappa, thanks to which I was able to run the tool to perfection.

The most common problem is with creating a named pipe for the service SPOOLSS that is not created if the server is not shared printers (which is quite common on XenApp servers). The problem (although with a different effect) is explained in KB883789 on the Microsoft site. The workaround is to simply create a Group Policy (Computer Policy -> Administrative Templates -> Printers -> Allow Print Spooler to accept client connections) and restart the server. Alternatively you can act directly on the registry by changing the value in RegisterSpoolerRemoteRpcEndPoint HKLM \ Software \ Policies \ Microsoft \ Windows NT \ Printers folder and restart the Printer Spooler service.

This workaround eliminates the fateful Error 2 which is often trying to access remotely to a server.

In addition, proper Kappa has prepared a version 1.1, which introduces, in addition to a native x64 version, even better error handling and a more comprehensive guide.
