VMware vSphere 4.0: lights and shadows

Last week VMware announced an online event with the upcoming release of new version of its flagship product, vSphere 4.0, which actually will not be available (either for download or purchase) until 21 May.

In his article Alessandro Perilli, known bloggers www.virtualization.info , analyzed and commented on the position of VMware.

This is the third announcement of the new platform, already presented at VMworld in Las Vegas in 2008 and at VMworld Europe in Cannes in 2009. VMware no longer speaks of the Virtual Data Center Operating System (VDC-OS), but Cloud Operating System (OS Cloud), as surely the most effect. Cloud computing for the world of SMEs, although the model is not exactly fitting for that kind of reality. So the new vSphere multiplies versions also trying to position itself in the market of small businesses (rsta ESXi free, but appear be 6 different versions with different functionality).

Despite the willingness to engage in enterprise and not really the unfavorable economic environment, VMware positions its product cost much higher, as if to underline its leading position also in the price (on the other hand Citrix has always had the same behavior with XenApp), and then cutting down versions in some cases lack the features found in versions of the free competition (in particular the Live Motion).

And 'now clear that the new vSphere is a major evolution in the model, and virtualization is a confirmation of the fact that it will take several months to get all the products of the house in Palo Alto. vSphere will not support, at least initially, Site Recovery Manager, Lab Manager, Lifecycle Manager, Stage Manager, but above View.

Last appearance: finance. In the first quarter of 2009, VMware has increased its turnover, but reducing significantly the sales of licenses and services growing much. This is in addition to all other assessments, with a not very promising results on the stock exchange.
