Oracle releases VM 2.2

oracle The database giant today announced the availability of the new version of its hypervisor Oracle VM 2.2.

This version introduces two innovations: first update of the engine is now based on Xen 3.4 and the second is the introduction of connectors for storage and APIs for provisioning.

The 3.4 version of Xen is the same on which the Xen Client Initiative and is used for the new client hypervisor developed by Citrix and Intel (XenClient) and suggests an interest by Oracle to develop a client hypervisor ( or at least support) to be included in the offer VDI.

The new Oracle VM Storage Connect framework should provide integration capabilities with the storage similar to those offered by Citrix Online Storage Link.

In addition to these features, Oracle VM 2.2 introduced:

Introduces Oracle VM 2.2 additional new features like:

  • maintenance mode for hosts
  • Scheduling priority for VM vCPU
  • ability to import VHD (ie Virtual Machine Microsoft Hyper-V, Citrix XenServer and Virtual Iron)
  • support for Intel Xeon 5500 (codename Nehalem) ssx-Core Opteron and AMD (codenamed "Istanbul")
