Extending a system disk has never been easier ...
Being with a system disk space is not a big problem. In the virtual environment it is manageable with the expansion of the disc, but it's still downtime required to enlarge the logical partition. Not always ....
This time we find solace in the Dell, with so small yet powerful software that can expand a logical disk hot, that is, with the operating system on.
Obviously there are some limitations: the disk must be Basic (dynamic disks are not supported), must be in NTFS and must expand at least 8MB, of course, only Windows systems. The utility of these calls ExtPart and was created to support the systems PowerVault series 750, 755, 770 and 775, but it magically works with virtual machines. ExtPart is dated July 30, 2003, so there is some concern about compatibility with newer systems.
The use of this tool is very simple: once you have unpacked the files in a folder, open a command prompt, navigate to the folder where you extracted the executable and run the command with the following parameters:
extpart volume size
The archive is a short readme which explains everything. As always it is highly advisable to make a snapshot before changing discs.
