In the wake of a recent white paper on scaling and XenDektop XenServer, Citrix updates this time another interesting document on the creation of an infrastructure based on XenDesktop VDI 4.0, hypervisor VMware ESX 3.5 and NetApp storage.

Some of the scaling tests are quite interesting since they are easily comparable to the results of the other document was used as the benchmark system VRC . At a glance:

Single Server Scalability Test - 6.25 VM / core

• Virtual Desktop: Windows XP - 512Mb RAM - 1 vCPU
• Hypervisors: VMware ESX 3.5 Update 4
• Hardware: HP Blade BL460c - 2.5Ghz CPU 2 x Intel Xeon L5420 Quad Core - 32GB RAM

Large Scale Test Scalability - 3312 concurrent VDI desktop

• Virtual Desktop: Windows XP-512MB RAM - 1 vCPU
• Hypervisors: VMware ESX 3.5 Update 4
• Hardware:
  • 6 enclosures for 96 total blades: HP BL460 Blade and BL460c
  • 1 HP BL 680 Citrix Provisioning Server
  • 1 HP BL 680 SQL Server 2005 db repository
• Storage: NetApp FAS3170HA controllers with 2 - 70 x 300GB drives
