VMware Workstation 7.1 and Fusion 3.1 in beta

VMware has released beta versions of VMware Workstation 7.1 and VMware Fusion 3.1.

With this new release, VMware has introduced some interesting new VMware Workstation 7.1 implements:

  • OpenGL 2.1 support for Windows Vista and Windows 7 (installed as a guest)
  • Support for 8-way SMP and virtual disks up to 2TB
  • Support for OVF 1.0 format
  • Support for Fedora 12 guest systems
  • Direct application launch (launch bar integrated into applications installed on the guest)
  • Autologon for Windows guest systems

As for Fusion 3.1, plus more than 200 bug fixes have been introduced in the previous two features:

  • OpenGL 2.1 support for Windows Vista and Windows 7 (installed as a guest)
  • Support for 8-way SMP and virtual disks up to 2TB

It seems particularly interesting to the continuous evolution of the integration of applications installed on the guest with the host operating system, since it reveals the attention of the house in Palo Alto toward the application, especially in view of future integration of these functions in the world and VDI in particular with the Virtual Client Platform, Type 1 hypervisor that VMware is developing in direct competition with Citrix XenClient.

Trial licenses issued with this beta will expire May 15, 2010, suggesting that the RTM version should be distributed prior to this date.
